Late Summer Cheatsheet: Simple and Delicious Cocktails for Labor Day in Quarantine

2020’s been a ride, y’all. After almost 6 months in lockdown, it’s hard to believe we were ever able to hop on the subway, grab lunch with friends, or go to the beach without worrying about COVID-19. You’re not alone in feeling that quarantine has stolen your summer. But it’s not too late! We’ve compiled a list of simple and delicious summer cocktails that will help you wring out the last bit of summertime fun, just in time for Labor Day!

Red cocktail in a mason jar with a lemon wedge

  • Watermelon Sling
  •

    Ingredients:

1.5 ounces of Bulleit bourbon or rye

    1.5 ounces of watermelon juice

.5 ounces of simple syrup, lemon juice, and Aperol

A healthy sprig of rosemary (mostly for aesthetics, let's be real)

    A whole round lemon slice

    Top with seltzer of choice

Is there anything more refreshing than watermelon? When paired with a nice stiff shot of whiskey and balanced out with lemon juice, syrup, and Aperol, this simple concoction elevates a picnic staple to another level. Whether you’re pairing it delicately with some cheeses and meats (not for nothing, but this cocktail goes beautifully with our sauvignon blanc jam), or using it to wash down standard backyard barbeque fixins, the watermelon sling is a no brainer.

Lime green cocktail in a rocks glass

  • Caipirinha
  • Ingredients:

    2 tablespoons of sugar

1 lime (sliced however, but wedges are the cutest tbh)

    2 ounces of cachaca

    Garnish: mint leaves

Maybe you encountered caipirinha in your pre-COVID drinking adventures. Maybe you didn’t. Either way, this cocktail is a central part of Brazil’s drinking culture for good reason. It’s refreshing, strong, delicious, and instantly makes you amazing at dancing Samba (seriously. When quarantine is lifted, you should drink 5 caipirinhas and attempt to samba in the most public venue available to you. The more people taking video, the better).

Cachaca is a Brazilian spirit derived from sugar with a flavor comparable to rum. However, its aged funk and florality set it apart from the Bacardi you drank in your dorm room. Make sure Caipirinha is in your Labor Day rotation.

  • Spritz Veneziano (aka Aperol Spritz)
  •

    Ingredients

    3 ounces of Aperol

    2 ounces of Prosecco

    Club soda (to top)

    Garnish with an orange wedge

Are you bummed that Coronavirus travel restrictions prevented you from going on vacation this summer? Well allow us to transport you to the Amalfi Coast with a cocktail that tastes like Italian summer and has the color palette of a Mediterranean sunset. Okay, well maybe it can’t make up for forgone travel plans… but this delicious, refreshing, and surprisingly potent cocktail can certainly make you feel better about spending Labor Day day at home!
